Thursday, December 5th, 2013, 18.5 million people were “Blown Away” by NBC’s live broadcast of The Sound of Music. Led by multiple-Grammy winner Carrie Underwood playing Maria, and the star of “True Blood”, Stephen Moyer as Captain Von Trapp, this 3-hour production captivated audiences throughout the country. The sound was flawless, and the acting was astonishing; yet many critics are targeting the role of Carrie Underwood in this production. Neil Meron, director of this live musical, said that “Carrie is Maria,” noting that she was his first choice at the position.  Julie Anderson, the original Maria herself, came to Carrie’s defense, saying “I had the best time of my life doing it, and it did wonderful things for me… [Carrie] is lovely, and I’m a fan.”

There was nothing wrong with Carrie Underwood’s performance. “Nobody can sing like Carrie Underwood,” as American Idol judge Randy Jackson stated. Even tv.msn.com, who wrote very critically on Underwood’s acting said, “And, ultimately, it was Underwood who got us to even tune in on Thursday.” Ratings estimate that over 75% of the viewers Thursday watched the show to see Underwood perform. Overall, the performance received many ratings; nearly all agreeing that Underwood was able to perform her task of singing brilliantly.
