The Signs and Their Traits

In my last of three astrology articles, I’m giving readers a little background on the twelve signs of the Zodiac, each associated with specific characteristics that affect those with that sign in any of their placements. Each sign is divided into an element based upon their traits.

The Fire signs are Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius. According to sources, these signs tend to be charismatic, headstrong, and expressive.

  • Aries, whose symbol is the Ram, is known for being competitive, strongly devoted, and undeniably confident. Their negative qualities include being hasty,  overly proud, and bossy. Since they are ruled by Mars, which Astrostyle states is “the planet of war and energy,” they have very strong personalities. Hubbard senior Leslie Summers has an Aries Sun. “I’m pretty competitive, and I enjoy rams I guess,” said Summers.
  • Leo is depicted by nothing less than the Lion, the symbol of courage and pride itself. Beyond their habits of being very blunt, self-centered, and hostile, Leos are protective, committed, and captivating. The Sun sign of senior Kelsey Tingler is in Leo. “I’m definitely very blunt, but I would consider it a good thing… I’m very honest with people,” she says. Being ruled by the Sun explains Leo’s radiating presence.
  • Sagittarius, symbolized by the Archer or the Centaur, is fair and truthful, and they always look on the bright side of things. However, they tend to initiate arguments and have commitment issues. Their ruling planet is Jupiter, which represents their good luck and personal development.

The Water signs are Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces. Emotions run high in the lives of these signs, states sources. Intimacy and privacy are extremely important to them.

  • Cancer, or the Crab, is ruled by the Moon. They have great people skills; Cancers are comforting, supportive, and tolerant. Unfortunately, they don’t always use the skills to their best ability, as they can also be detached and introverted.
  • The Scorpion is the perfect symbol for Scorpio, one of the most intense of the signs. They tend to be rather compulsive and obsessive, but they are also protective and bold. Pluto, the planet known for reformation and power, rules this secretive and hypnotic sign.
  • Pisces, ruled by Neptune, has the symbol of the Fish, which is the perfect representation for a water sign. They tend to be very artistic, romantic, and intelligent, yet airheaded, sympathetic towards themselves, and hard on themselves. Being the planet of “fantasy,” Neptune truly follows the identity of a Pisces.

The Earth signs are Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn. As the realists of all of the signs, the Earth signs are practical and timid, sources state.

  • Taurus is represented by the Bull due to their stubborn nature. They are committed and cautious while being procrastinators and greedy. The ruling planet of Taurus is Venus.
  • Virgo, arguably the most efficient sign, is known as the Virgin. They are ruled by the planet of communication: Mercury. This hard-working, quick-witted sign can be rather judgemental and self-pitying from time to time.
  • Capricorns’ symbol is the Mountain Goat. This easily depicts their brave, honest outlook on life. However, Capricorns tend to look on the worst side and prioritize material things. Saturn is their ruling planet.

The final category of signs is the Air signs. This includes Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius. Air signs are generally very social and intelligent.

  • Gemini, or the Twins, is ruled by Mercury, like Virgo. The visual of the Twins perfectly shows the Gemini’s tendency to be superficial or “two-faced.” They are always unafraid and ready for a challenge.
  • Libra has the symbol of the Scales, and like Taurus, is ruled by Venus. Libras are easy to love and super trustworthy. Unfortunately, they are ridiculously indecisive and are known to have their heads in the clouds.
  • The final sign is Aquarius. Symbolized by the Water Bearer, Aquarius is ruled by the planet of originality, Uranus, which explains their innovative minds. Aquarius also seem very warm and comfortable to others. On the bad side, they are uninvolved in the world around them and can be illogical.
