Lately we’ve been seeing a rise in the number of teenage celebrities all over the internet, and I think I know one of the main sources. An app called “Tik-Tok,” formerly known as “Musical.ly,” has been gaining popularity over the summer. Online sources define this app as “an iOS and Android social media video app for creating and sharing short lip-sync, comedy, and talent videos. The app was launched in 2017 by ByteDance, for markets outside of China. ByteDance has previously launched Douyin for the China market in September 2016.” (See video insert below).  Concerning the app, Junior, Isaiah Vennetti had this to say: “Tik-Tok and YouTube, everyone is trying to become “Tik-Tok famous.” To become famous on this app, a teen does not need to have trained talent or comedic skills. App-users just have to judge one as a good dancer, singer, comedian or a compilation of all of the above. Some teens have gained millions of followers on Tik-Tok, and it’s even possible for them to get paid by their viewers.

There are still some traditional teenage celebs, though, and they did not get their big break via Tik Tok.  Some of them include: Billie Eilish (teen singer), Jace Norman (Nickelodeon star), Skai Jackson (Disney actress and model) and Millie Bobby Brown (Eleven on Stranger Things). Isaac Powell, a junior,  said “My favorite teenage celebrity is Jace Norman, that guy’s hilarious!” These stars became famous in a more traditional way, such as acting in movies or shows, or creating music. These teen celebs are often appreciated by adults, too; whereas the teenagers who gain their fame online via apps like Tik Tok are usually acknowledged only by adolescents.

Believe it or not, some kids at Hubbard High School are gaining views and followers just as fast as some popular creators. The main goal is to get on something called the “foryou page” on Tik Tok.  When an app user opens the app, there appear videos created “for you” based on one’s previous watch and posting history. With quality videos that include unique content and music, a teen can get on this page, and more people can see his/her videos and continue to share them with their friends. Some believe that there is a simple code to getting a user on a foryou page, and people are working on it everyday. Some of the ways to get on are by tagging #fyp, #foryou, or #foryoupage. Some people don’t tag anything, but still manage to make it on the page with no captions and virtually no followers. It’s confusing to everybody.

So if you’re creative, comedic or musically talented, try your luck on Tik-Tok.  While some may spend their time simply watching teenage celebrities lip sync and dance to other people’s songs, others may be creating and editing to make some money.
