What Sport Does Hubbard High School Favor The Most?
February 10, 2023
Hubbard High School is full of school spirit, especially when it comes to the athletic department. Although when it comes down to the favorite sport, some may disagree on what it is. As we are in January, we have all of the winter sports going on. Although, does the school enjoy winter sports, spring sports, or fall sports more?
As we know it, football is a favorite sport for many and most. High school, college, and professional football are something that people rave over all year round. Pro Football Hall of Fame states, “Football continues to be the most popular sport in the United States.” According to Gallup.com, 37% of U.S. adults picked football as their favorite sport to watch.” Although, we also have soccer and the World Cup that people will talk about for months. What about baseball and all of the major and minor leagues? So many to choose from, but the real question is, what is Hubbard’s overall favorite?
At Hubbard High School, sophomore Lauren Komorek responded to this question. “I think that Hubbard favors football the most. Personally, I believe most of the school funds go to football,” states Komorek. Junior Kaylana Smith, responds similarly by stating, “As a cheerleader for both basketball and football, I’ve noticed a difference between the two. That difference has a lot to do with the funds provided for both sports. Football definitely gets the better end of the stick.”
Although these statements may be true, is it a good thing if a school favors one sport over another? Many students rely on sports for athletic scholarships, and hopefully for their future careers. NCAA states, “Individual schools award athletics scholarships. Division I and II schools provide more than $3.7 billion in athletics scholarships annually to nearly 190,000 student-athletes.” Meanwhile, if the school you go to puts more time into one sport, what happens to yours? If the sport your child is playing doesn’t get the attention and money it needs, how will that sport ever get noticed?
Hubbard has a diverse selection of sports, although when it comes down to the favorite it can be only decided by what sport gets the most attention. The sad truth is all sports deserve a fair amount, but many schools typically favor one sport over another.
