Teenagers tend to get a lot of their entertainment, ideas and enjoyment from social media. There are hundreds of platforms available on phones. Some of the more popular are Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook, TikTok, Pinterest, Google, YouTube, Netflix, Houseparty, and FaceTime. Each of the apps allows easy communication with friends and family whether they are close or far away. Some of the platforms also allow users to get creative with pictures, videos and answer many questions.

Some of these site are naturally more popular than others.  Which are the most popular among teens today?  According to a site titled “Statista”, the chart below outlines those most popular as of the last quarter of 2020 up through December of 2021:

The article continues to state: “During the survey period, it was found that 63 percent of responding internet users aged 15 to 25 years used social photo sharing app Instagram. Despite Snapchat’s dominance, Facebook continues to be the more widely used social networking site used by teenagers and young adults. A total of 50 percent of respondents currently use Facebook, compared to 48 percent of respondents who stated that they used Snapchat. Yet when teens, whose average age was 16, rated their most important social network Snapchat, Instagram, and Twitter where given more important ratings than Facebook. These social networks are being increasingly visited via mobile devices.”

These multiple  platforms give teens an easy way to stay in touch with friends and family, especially during Covid. Facebook allows one to be able to post a picture of something that he or she might have done that day. Then, family and friends could all communicate with each other and share whatever they wanted and needed to. Instagram is a similar platform to Facebook, but it also allows users to edit the photos with fun filters and context. There are even more crazy and wild filters on the app Snapchat. This reporter asked Junior Kalliopi Manias:  “ What was the first social media platform you downloaded and why?” She replied, “ Snapchat.  I heard about all of the fun filters my friends were using and it got me excited.”

Watching shows, videos and movies is a nice way to relax with the family. Netflix, and YouTube have genres of all kinds for people to watch. Netflix and YouTube can be used as entertainment for hours, and it is super easy to binge watch all of the interesting shows presented on these platforms. The viewing of these apps skyrocketed when everyone was stuck at home with nothing else to do.

TikTok and Pinterest allow people to get creative. On the TikTok platform, users can watch quick 30-60 second videos, most of which are dances. You can recreate the fun dances and share them for everyone to see. This reporter asked senior Noelle Trobek, “ What is your favorite social media platform, and why”? She replied: “ Although I do not make any TikTok videos of my own, I still enjoy watching them. I get endless hours of enjoyment and entertainment from the app.” Pinterest is full of DIYs and crafts for everyone to do. It’s a perfect way to get rid of boredom. The step by step crafts and DIYs allow for creativity to flow.

Texting wasn’t the only way to get in contact with others during Covid. FaceTime and HouseParty allow the user to see the person’s face and have a conversation with him or her. In Houseparty, one can play games and talk to whomever  all at the same time. These apps also hit their most viewing time during the peak of Covid.  Take a look at the list above and ask yourself where your favorite social media app fits.
