High School is either the best or worst time of a person’s life. But why do students hate high school more than their peers? Many would say they just hate doing the work. However, is this really the students’ fault, or do they need more encouragement from their teachers? Teachers having a more positive learning environment would benefit students’ focus and will allow them to enjoy school more.
According to “A Teacher’s Encouragement Gives Students a Lasting Boost”, Brenda Iasevoli says, “Students who reported encouragement from teachers continued their education after they turned 16 at a rate of 74 percent. Students who said they did not receive encouragement continued school at a rate of 66 percent.” This means that teachers who just simply support their students. Hubbard Alumni Gabriella Jones says, “Mrs. Schellhorn always encouraged me since the first day of freshman year to pursue my passion in film and she helped me learn how to do the basics of making videos and learning premiere pro. She always pushed me to think creatively.” Jones is now a freshman at SCAD university in Savannah, Georgia and is pursuing her dreams of directing films. Due to the overwhelming amount of encouragement from her teacher, she was able to break out of her shell and pursue her dream allowing her to succeed.
Studies have also shown that students who are complimented on their hard work and received recognition for their achievements allow them to succeed better. Peabody College performed an experiment to see if students would work harder and get tutoring for a money award, a certificate of recognition, or to have no reward at all. Students who received a certificate attended school 42.5% and women were more likely to attend. Teachers recognizing students’ accomplishments and ability to work hard allowed them to want to continue to work hard. “I was recognized in my media productions class on my work ethic and how I’m determined to accomplish what I in-vision. It made me enjoy the class more because it gave me a boost of confidence when I create projects for that class now and made me realize the skills I have that I could apply to my future.
“Yes, quite recently I was recognized in my media productions class on my work ethic and how I’m determined to accomplish what I in-vision. It made me enjoy the class more because it gave me a boost of confidence when I create projects for that class now and made me realize the skills I have that I could apply to my future,” says sophomore Gianna Rotunno.
So whether is a students best or worst school subject, with teachers encouragement and recognition it is more likely for them to succeed.
