Feeling the Bern: Political Satire

February 15, 2016
Have you ever known someone who is very popular, but you have no clue why they are liked by everyone? That is the general summary of Bernie Sanders’s presidential campaign as of the start of 2016. Bernie is the only serious competition that Hillary has for the Democratic nomination, holding 30% of the national vote and winning in New Hampshire (which is his home state). Why is he putting up so much of a fight compared to the other Democrats entering the race? I really don’t know if there is a discernible reason. Just look at his run up to this point; he has had as much media coverage as my pair of dusty old sneakers in the attic, has very little of the minority vote, is the oldest candidates in the race, and gets frequently mocked by any Republicans or Hillary fans for his policies. The question still remains, what is this guy’s secret? And why is he so popular with youth, women and many traditional party Democrats?
I have a possible theory for why he has all this unexplainable support. I feel that the desperate Democrats who detest Hillary Clinton are running to the sanest out of the remaining candidates. Since the only other candidates were Jim “where is my time” Webb and Lincoln Chafee (that guy nobody really cared about in the first place), good ol’ Bernie got votes as free of charge as his plans for college education. Many people don’t even take him as a serious candidate because he leans so far to the left that he often loses balance and falls in the polls. I personally can’t take him seriously because whenever I see him, I immediately think of Waldorf from “The Muppet Show” who sat in the balcony and constantly made fun of everything. For whatever reason, Bernie is doing well in the polls, and I’m curious to see how far he can make it into the election before people realize that he has the strongest Socialist agenda of any candidate in the race, which would suggest that his economic policies are hardly “American” in tone or nature.
