A junior or senior high school student is put in a difficult position. The time has finally come where he or she needs to start thinking about a future career and planning how to get to that point.

“I’m going to Ohio State to play volleyball. I’m also planning on attending their med school, in hopes of becoming a plastic surgeon in trauma or reconstruction,” explains Adria Powell, a junior at Hubbard High School who is already organizing her goals for the future. Though it is a great accomplishment to have an ideal life planned out, it is not easy for everyone to decide exactly what he or she wants to do. Most people, if not everyone, want a job that they are passionate about. They want to have a career that is enjoyable, and they don’t want to dread going to work everyday.

Though having a career one is passionate about is very important, it is not the only factor that goes into choosing an occupation. Americans, for better or worse, have always placed an emphasis on money; therefore, salary is very important to most people, and often times can be the deciding factor in choosing a career.

College can be scary to think about, but it is not a bad idea to start thinking about an undergraduate degree early. If living well  is one’s goal for the future, then here is a list of undergraduate degrees that will present a college graduate with better or worse odds of making a lot of money in the career he or she has chosen. This data was provided through the online sources listed below.

Highest Paying Majors With A Bachelor’s Degree

1)Petroleum Engineering: Average Median Salary – $136,000

2)Pharmaceutical Sciences and Administration: Average Median Salary – $113,000

3)Metallurgical Engineering: Average Median Salary – $98,000

4)Mining and Mineral Engineering: Average Median Salary – $97,000

5)Chemical Engineering: Average Median Salary – $96,000

Lowest Paying Majors With A Bachelor’s Degree

1)Biology: Average Median Salary – $41,250

2)Social Work: Average Median Salary – $41,656

3)Health Care Administration: Average Median Salary – $42,000

4)Sociology: Average Median Salary – $42,000

5) Psychology: Average Median Salary – $42,000

Now that one has been presented with a little bit of background on salaries concerning these undergraduate degrees, maybe he or she will do a little more research into a different degree other than one previously chosen, or maybe instead, this outline above will reinforce someone’s career goal.

“I plan on taking my education to the highest level possible. Hopefully, I will be able to attain a doctor of medicine degree one day,” says junior Mikey VanSuch. “There is nothing wrong with a bachelor’s degree, I just need to have a higher level of education to attain my dream job,” explains VanSuch.

Following one’s heart and getting that dream job is the most important factor in developing a path for the future. Though money is important, it should not be the only deciding factor to what someone becomes, or what major he or she chooses to declare in college.
